Environmental Stewardship Coordinator, Somerset County Park Commission Environmental Education Center, Basking Ridge NJ - Coordinate and produce environmental, historical, and cultural events, programs, and exhibits.  Oversee land management of 500 acres of parkland and make recommendations to Manager on environmentally sensitive issues such as invasive plant species removal, meadow management, and habitat restoration.  Qualifications:  Bachelor of Arts or Science degree from an accredited college or institution of higher education in the field of life science, ecology, earth sciences, natural resource management, or other natural history curricula.  Degrees in other fields acceptable provided applicant has experience, training or supplementary education in life sciences.  Minimum of three years’ experience in natural resource management, research and/or field techniques.  Thorough knowledge of environmental and ecological concepts and land management issues; ability to work with the public involving people of all ages; ability to utilize computers; basic knowledge of handling administrative matters in the absence of direct supervision; strong planning, designing, and organizational skills. Horticulture ForemanMORRIS COUNTY (NJ) PARK COMMISSION is seeking a full-time Horticulture Foreman.  Employees in this position are responsible for overseeing and assisting with the hands-on development, installation, and maintenance of the gardens and plant collections at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum and throughout the Horticulture Sites operated by the Park Commission. Individuals should have strong leadership and supervisory skills, possess a strong understanding of horticulture, display mastery of the skills necessary to perform horticulture tasks, and be familiar with the identification and cultivation of a wide variety of woody and herbaceous landscape plants.

Essential functions include

  • Inspect the gardens and plant collections regularly and identify horticultural tasks that need to be performed. Prioritize horticultural tasks, develop work schedules, and coordinate their implementation with subordinates.
  • Supervise Gardeners, Assistant Gardeners, Grounds workers, interns, seasonal staff, and volunteers when performing horticultural tasks and monitor the quality of their work.
  • Train and supervise staff in the maintenance of annuals, perennials, vines, shrubs, tropical plants, and trees in accordance with the horticultural standards of the Morris County Park Commission.
  • Train and supervise staff in all aspects of arboretum maintenance and development including soil preparation, planting & transplanting, mulching, watering, weeding, fertilizing, pruning, propagating, mowing, raking, sweeping & blowing, tree & brush cutting, chipping, and the proper use of hand tools.
  • Train and supervise staff in the proficient operation of push mowers, riding mowers, string trimmers, backpack blowers, push blowers, tractors, chainsaws, chippers, snow plows and other power equipment.
  • Provide hands-on assistance with the completion of work tasks.
  • Design and plan garden annual, perennial, and bulb displays. Evaluate garden displays and recommend improvements.
  • Apply pesticides and herbicides and maintain application records.
  • Oversee equipment use and coordinate equipment maintenance. 

Minimum: A two-year Associate’s degree in Horticulture or a related field; three year’s work as a professional gardener or groundskeeper; one year’s experience supervising a crew; a thorough knowledge of the horticultural requirements of a wide variety of woody and herbaceous landscape plants; demonstrated understanding of horticultural practices and procedures; the ability to identify frequently used woody, herbaceous, and annual landscape plants; and the ability to obtain Pesticide Operator License from the NJ DEP.

Senior Gardener – MORRIS COUNTY (NJ) PARK COMMISSION is seeking a full-time Senior Gardener.  Employees in this position are responsible for the supervision and monitoring of subordinate staff, seasonal, intern and volunteer staff, as well as hands-on maintenance of the gardens and plant collections throughout the Horticulture sites operated by the Morris County Park Commission.  Individuals should have a strong understanding of horticulture, possess the skills necessary to perform horticultural maintenance tasks, and be familiar with the identification and cultivation of a wide variety of woody, herbaceous, and annual landscape plants. 

Essential functions include:

  • Supervises and coordinates the work of subordinate garden staff, including seasonal staff, interns, and volunteers
  • physically works at tasks necessary for the successful cultivation of plant materials in garden and landscape settings, including but not limited to: planting, transplanting, pest control, plant nutrition, irrigation, pruning and other functions;  as well as in the nursery, cold frames, greenhouse areas, plant propagation areas, buildings and offices.
  • Assists with the training and development of garden staff to perform all facets of horticultural maintenance.
  • Coordinates the use of volunteers with the Volunteer Coordinator and gardening staff
  • Engraves plastic labels for use on trees and shrubs, as well as other signs, and maintains engraving equipment in proper working order.  Supervises and coordinates volunteers and staff in the production and installation of labels.
  • Plants and maintains annuals, perennials, shrubs, and trees.
  • Physically works in all aspects of arboretum maintenance and development, including soil preparation, planting & transplanting, mulching, watering, weeding, fertilizing, pruning, propagating, mowing, raking, sweeping & blowing, tree & brush cutting, and chipping. 
  • Operates in a proficient manner push mowers, riding mowers, string  trimmers, backpack blowers, push blowers, , tractors, pickup trucks, chainsaws, chippers, and other power equipment in accordance with MCPC safety protocols.
  • Utilizes shovels, trowels, fan rakes, grading rakes, spades, digging forks, pick axes, brooms, hand shears, hand saws, loppers, pole pruners & pole saws, wheel barrows, fertilizer spreaders, garden carts, ladders, and other hand tools to properly complete assigned tasks. 
  • Designs, plans and evaluates garden annual, perennial, and bulb displays. 
  • Monitors gardens and plant collections for pests and diseases.  Reports pest and disease problems. 
  • Applies pesticides and herbicides and maintains application records.Monitors and organizes pesticide application records for garden staff.
  • Maintains and coordinates plant records as directed; assists with plant collections and facility GIS/GPS mapping.

Minimum:  A two-year Associate’s degree in Horticulture or a related field; plus at least three year’s work as a professional gardener or groundskeeper or equivalent experience; ability to organize coordinate, and supervise staff and volunteers; the ability to competently maintain annuals, perennials, shrubs, and trees in garden and arboretum settings; a demonstrated understanding of the horticultural practices and procedures required for soil preparation, planting & transplanting, mulching, watering, weeding, fertilizing, pruning, propagating; the ability to identify frequently used woody, herbaceous, and annual landscape plants by botanical and common name;  and the ability to obtain Pesticide Operator License from the NJ DEP.

Seasonal Naturalist-Summer Science Programs, Somerset County Park Commission – Basking Ridge 

Working under the direction of a full-time Naturalist, Summer Science Program Naturalists teach environmental science programs. Primary responsibilities include the development and implementation of nature and science lessons, and the supervision of children. Summer Science Program Seasonal Naturalists are also responsible for gathering supplies, leading hikes, and chaperoning field trips. Our mission is to stimulate awareness and understanding of the natural world in order to foster a sense of responsibility for its care. Qualifications:  Bachelor of Arts or Science degree from an accredited college or institution of higher education, or current enrollment in the field of natural sciences, parks and recreation, or education. Degrees in other fields acceptable provided applicant has experience, training or supplementary education in life sciences. Experience developing, organizing, and conducting interpretive programs for youth preferred. Familiarity with trends in Environmental Education preferred. Seasonal Naturalist/Paddle sport Assistant, Somerset County Park Commission – Basking Ridge 

Under the direction of a full-time Naturalist, assist with canoe, kayak, and stand up paddle programs while providing the highest level of customer service. Provide program participants with answers to inquiries regarding the environment, ecology, and other related issues. May also provide basic nature interpretation. Qualifications:  Bachelor of Arts or Science degree from an accredited college or institution of higher education, or current enrollment in the field of natural sciences, parks and recreation, or education. Degrees in other fields acceptable provided applicant has experience, training or supplementary education in life sciences. Strong paddling skills and ability to teach in a compassionate manner. Strong leadership abilities in outdoor situations; and ability to understand skill models, assess student skills, and devise tactics to guide students learning to more closely approximate models. Must complete a mandatory in-house training program. Customer service experience and strong people skills. Basic computer knowledge. Creative approach to problem solving. Physically able to lift and load kayaks, canoes, and other paddle sport gear, and to perform water rescues. ACA certification desirable. CPR and First Aid Certification (In-house CPR and First Aid training available) Wilderness First Responder and Swift Water Rescue a plus. Must be able to pass a criminal background check. Must be able to work a flexible schedule including long days, weekdays, and weekends. Possess a valid driver’s license and have a good driving record. Ability to drive a 12-passenger van.
