DIRECTOR OF PARKS & RECREATION

The Town of Preston is located in New London County in the southeastern region of Connecticut. This semi-rural town is 31.3 squares miles in area, with commercial activity centered on a few small retail centers along the major roads. Preston has successfully retained the small-town charm that is missing from most modern suburbs, including keeping its working farms and plentiful open space.

The First Selectwoman is the Chief Elected and Chief Administrative Officer of the Town. The First Selectwoman appoints the Director of Parks & Recreation.

The Director of Parks and Recreation performs professional, management and administrative work in planning and implementing all adult and youth recreation programs. This position is responsible for the execution of policies and procedures, and the supervision of staff including scheduling and training for all parks and recreation programs. It ensures proper maintenance of P&R facilities. The position evaluates the needs of the various populations it serves and seeks out new ideas and methods to provide the appropriate services. Supervises the Recreation Office Assistant, Park Maintainers, Summer Camp Directors & Counselors, Program Instructors, Basketball Referees, Volunteers.

Qualifications:

The qualifications required would generally be a Bachelor’s degree in recreation, physical education or a related area. A minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience is required, preferably in a municipality, with 2-3 years of supervisory experience, and/ or any equivalent combination of education, training, and work experience.

Special Requirements:

  • Must have and maintain: Valid CT Driver’s License
  • CPR/First Aid Certification
  • Certified Parks & Recreation Professional (CPRP) preferred

Education Management Responsibilities:

RECREATION PROGRAM SPECIALIST

Essential Functions:

·        Trains MCPC seasonal recreation staff on an ongoing basis in First Aid, CPR, and AED programs, monitoring and addressing recertification requirements.

·        Trains the MCPC seasonal lake staff on an ongoing basis in water safety and lifeguarding while monitoring that the staff maintains the proper certifications.

·        Assists in the coordination and the operation of the Lake Recreation Areas. Duties include supervision of seasonal staff, evaluating, picking up/processing paperwork, delivering supplies, and filling in for staff as needed.

·        Assist with annual budget preparation for the lake areas; order supplies, uniforms, and equipment as needed, monitor program expenditures.

·        Assists in the coordination and the operation of the Recreation Areas within the Division’s responsibility. Duties include supervision of seasonal staff, scheduling, filling in when necessary, picking up and processing paperwork, and delivering supplies.

·        Prepares analytical reports and correspondence related to Park Commission recreational programs and activities.

·        Coordinates schedule of various sports use requests, including soccer, softball, kickball, disc golf, lacrosse, volleyball, cross-country and mountain biking, working with other park staff and group representatives from application process through completion.

·        Assists in the cash handling and revenue control processing.

·        Collects insurance documents from renters for approval.

Job Description:

Responsible for driving / operating the Zamboni machine by following procedures to ensure the highest quality ice maintenance for the safety of all customers. Candidate would also be responsible for assisting with the cleaning and maintenance of the machines, equipment, and the overall facility.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Must be available to a shift schedule that includes working nights, early mornings, weekends, and holidays.

2. Drives and operates the Zamboni according to all safety guidelines during scheduled shifts.

3. Responsible for making ice as assigned according to the ice rink schedule and the general maintenance of the ice surface during shifts using the edger machine.

4. Responsible for monitoring the ice and equipment for any problems and notifying management regarding any issues.

5. Responsible for assisting with general maintenance and janitorial cleaning of the facility which includes: restrooms, sweeping floors, removing trash, cleaning of locker rooms, benches, and stands as needed.

6. Trash removal and event set-ups

7. Facilities inspection and coordination with vendors for repairs.

8. Complete daily compressor logs, maintenance log and shift report.

  • ·       Able to communicate with guests and staff in a professional manner
  • ·       Investigates complaints and accidents and immediately informs the Pool Manager, Aquatics Coordinator and Director of Parks and Recreation
  • ·       Tests the temperature, chlorine, and PH values of the pools on an hourly basis
  • ·       Complete and/ or approved required safety checklists, logs and reports.
  • ·       Collects, counts, and records pool receipts from daily swim pool passes and swim lessons in receipt books at the end of each day.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • ·       Associates degree recommended
  • ·       Must possess a valid government issued ID and Social Security Card
  • ·       Required to submit to a background check
  • ·       Minimum of three (3) seasons of lifeguarding or three (3) years of supervisory experience 
  • ·       Current certification in American Red Cross First Aid and CPR/ AED or ability to obtain within sixty (60) days of hire
  • ·       Current certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding or equivalent; desired
  • ·       CPO Certification; preferred
  • EXPECTED WORK HOURS
  • ·       Required pre-season hours for management meetings, staff training, and pool operations
  • ·       Typically, 40 hours per week in- season; 90-95 operating days
  • ·       Part-Time work arrangements may be available

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • ·       Frequently required to stand, walk, talk, hear, sit, and balance
  • ·       Ability to regularly use hands to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools or controls and to reach with hands and arms
  • ·       Routinely must lift, move and carry up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds
  • ·       Must be able to endure temperatures ranging from cool to extreme heat

Assistant Recreation Director - Bernardsville Borough – seeking candidates who, under the direction and supervision of the Recreation Director, will be responsible for assisting in the management, operation and administration of the Department including planning, developing, scheduling, and implementing year round recreation programs for the Borough. RECREATION COORDINATOR

CHERRY HILL TOWNSHIP

Working with the Recreation Manager and Director, this person will primarily manage administrative tasks, scheduling, classroom set-ups and lead scripted tours. 

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrable familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, including publisher and power point. 
  • Possesses demonstrable verbal communications skills including verbal presentation skills or instruction skills. 
  • Possesses demonstrable written communications skills including writing and computer skills 
  • Possesses energy, excitement, and the social skills needed for working successfully with other staff members, board members, students, volunteers, and the public
  • Exhibits strong organizational and scheduling skills
  • Background and interest in history and/or historical preservation a plus

 Responsibilities:

  • Oversees Barclay Farmstead community garden program, Plant-A-Patch
  • Facilitates historic Barclay Farmstead 5th Grade School Tour program 
  • Assist Recreation Manager to coordinate and schedule classes and programs including supplies and staffing needs 
  • Manages facility rental requests and scheduling of Carmen Tilelli Community Center
  • Creates and maintains a monthly calendar of Barclay Farmstead activities
  • Serve as the Township liaison to the Friends of Barclay Farmstead and Cherry Hill Historical Commission, attending monthly meetings
  • Helps to train and oversee staff and volunteers in various duties
  • Occasional night/weekend hours (events, classes and meetings)
  • Open and close facilities
  • Attends staff meetings and training sessions as requested
  • Assists with the set-up/break down of events and classes as needed
  • Assists with Recreation registration process including daily financial reporting and refunds
  • Assists with front office operations (phone calls, greeting visitors, program registration) and general administrative duties as assigned 
  • Insures that all recreation site equipment and supplies are adequate and in good condition, and makes recommendations for replacement when necessary
  • Help Recreation Manager in soliciting new companies or instructors for new programming and meeting potential new instructors

 Physical requirements

  • Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work
  • Some combination of climbing and balancing to include climbing ladders, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling
  • May involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds)

 Education/Software Requirements

  • Familiarity with registration software a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
  • Microsoft Office Suite
