CDC announced available grants for the State Physical Activity and Nutrition (SPAN) Program. Poor nutrition and low levels of physical activity affect overall health and are significant risk factors for obesity and other chronic diseases. This five-year program provides state health departments the support and flexibility to work on systems at the state and local levels to implement evidence-based strategies and to leverage resources from multiple stakeholders and sectors to improve the nutrition and physical activity status of Americans. Trails projects, pedestrian and bicycle projects (including modifications to comply with accessibility requirements under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990), and Safe Routes to School projects are eligible under multiple Federal funding programs. Although many States focus on the Transportation Alternatives or the Recreational Trails Program, trail and pedestrian and bicycle projects are also eligible under the Surface Transportation Block Grant Program (STBG).
